Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Cars and Trucks
9 Oct 2012
This week your challenge is to show off up to three photos of cars or trucks.
In the following photos of mine I will give you a couple of tips and tricks for taking photos of vehicles. Once again I encourage you to play around and take a lot of photos and see what appeals best to you. It will help in developing your own style and photographic eye.
1. This first shot is of an old early 1930s Ford Truck. In this case I took only part of the car. I thought the two wheels looked a lot like the infinity symbol or sideways figure 8. It just flows so elegant. Taking a part of a vehicle can be quite interesting. You may want to try headlights, tail lights, and grills are my all time favorite. Some vintage cars has great mirrors and windows too.

2. This next photo is of an old vintage truck taking at what is called the 3/4 vehicle view. This truck is also moving on a dirt road as you can tell by the dirt that is flying in the back of the truck so there is a little action in the shot as well. I also used selective coloring to bring out the old vintage truck and service sign. (Photo taken at Powerland Museum in Brooks, Oregon)

3. This next photo displays three cars and if you look closely there are a lot in the background as well. I think of this as my old time gangster photo. The photo isn’t nearly as impressive in color because the cars are all darker colored by different and the cars in the background with their various colors added to the noise in the photo. Sepia worked well and really amplified the old time gangster feel to this photo. (Photo taken at a car show near Eugene, Oregon)

As you can tell I am a fan of vintage cars. You can photograph cars and trucks of any era for this challenge.
Your photographs can be straight out of the camera or edited in Photoshop or other software. I’m excited to see everyone’s photography.
How It Works?
- Most weeks I will come up with a topic and along with a tip on how to take a better photo. Feel free to write me with things you want to learn about.
- Go through you photo archives and see what photos you have that fits the current week’s challenge, or better yet grab you camera and take a new photo!
- Please keep your photos to only three or less per week.
- ENJOY and have FUN.

I enjoy looking at vintage cars too – and to see how different the vechiles of yesterday were.
Oct 09, 2012 @ 09:41:12
I loved all three shots! I think the sepia for the bottom shot really works well – that was a good decision.
I’d add one more tip to the top shot – be sure to also back up and take some of the entire car. That way if you make a mistake and need to straighten you’ve got some extra room to crop. Also, while editing your slides you may find that you want to try cropping something else that you didn’t notice at the time. This is where having extra pixels helps, especially when you might not have an opportunity to photograph something again.
My turtles on a log (towards the bottom) are actually a crop from a landscape photo. The boat I was in was moving fast. I had only one try to get this shot. It’s probably only about 20% of the rest of what was in that photo.

You are so right that if you try to do the perfect crop with your camera, you are undoubtedly going to miss something. I’ve learned that one the hard way. I always take photos at the highest/finest resolution…so when i crop it is still a great photo. Great advice thanks for posting it. And I love that photo of the turtles.
Oct 10, 2012 @ 20:26:56
I guess I won’t be posting for your theme. I don’t seem to have any car photos of my own but thought I could do some of Grandpa with his Model A Ford. Apparently I didn’t scan them! I scanned a bunch of others for the family albums I’ve done, but not those. So frustrating! I love the antique cars (and trucks especially) and need to be more proactive getting some pictures of them.

P.S. Thanks for the compliment on the turtle shot. I forgot to tell you that earlier.

Reblogged this on A-Z ARCHIVE : NELLIBELL49 ON THE BELLINGER RIVER IN 2012 and commented:
I thought it was about opposites of the rainbow this week and was lost. Vehicles I think I can do.

gorgeous images Cee and I love these tips. I have always heard the photographing cars is one of the most difficult things to do well
Oct 09, 2012 @ 13:24:18
I’m so disappointed I won’t be able to enter this challenge because, although I adore classic cars, I’ve already done a post on them (http://jennifercrites.wordpress.com/2012/08/12/classic-cars-and-a-dog). But Cie, I have to say, your photos here are outstanding. I’m expecting Bonnie and Clyde to step out of one of those old gangster cars at any moment
Oct 09, 2012 @ 13:53:47
They don’t have to be classic vehicles. They can be brand new or any age. I like your classics ALOT!!
Oct 09, 2012 @ 13:35:17
Oh Cee, these are great!! I love the red and black of the first car, and the Infinity symbol. But I like the other old truck and the “gangster” cars as well. I hope you’re feeling better–prayers continuing!
Oct 09, 2012 @ 14:34:57
I may have to join in this one, but possibly with a third of the required photos.
Oct 09, 2012 @ 15:16:29
You can most definitely enter only one photo….I’d love to see it.
